Food Heroes. The project name is sound and clear. It focuses on innovative food entrepreneurs working on the reduction of food losses in the ‘neglected’ first parts of the food chain. This project works across three food sectors (fish, meat and fruit & vegetables). We are a volunteer group, taking surplus food and turning it into daily meal packs, delivered across Edinburgh. These packs contain Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, along with some snacks. They are designed to be balanced meals, with enough calories to ensure the most vulnerable are staying fed. We also offer hot food to take away. Both of these services are completely free for users, and available 7 days.

Insects, especially flies, have the potential to help meet the demand for sustainable protein sources. Fly larvae are a natural component of the diet of fish, chickens and pigs. PROteINSECT focuses on rearing two species of fly and conducting feeding trials with these animals. The larvae, grown on a range of organic wastes, can also reduce the volume of that waste by up to 60%, providing an additional benefit.
